

Within a week, the #EU released its #ElectrificationActionPlan and #China published its #RenewableEnergyDevelopmentPlan for 2026–2030. While the EU plan focuses on accelerating electrification, China’s plan sets quantitative targets for renewable energy expansion and its reliable contribution to the power system. What stands out in China’s new plan? ⚡ China targets 3,500 GW of #renewablepowercapacity by 2030 Issued by the China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and National Energy Administration(NEA) for the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026–2030), the plan sets the following 2030 targets: 🎯 Overall target: Total #renewableenergy consumption of around 1.8 billion tonnes of coal equivalent (tce). 🎯 Power generation targets: Around 3,500 GW of installed #renewablepower capacity and approximately 6,000 TWh of annual renewable electricity generation. Combined wind and solar capacity will exceed 2,800 GW, accounting for over 50% of total installed power capacity, with annual generation above 4,000 TWh, accounting for 30% of total electricity generation. 🎯 Non-electric utilization targets: Non-electric renewable energy utilization will reach around 150 million tce, up 150% from 2025 levels. 🎯 Reliable substitution targets: The national average wind and solar capacity credit (under a 95% confidence level), including co-located energy storage, is targeted to reach 8% (around 11% for wind and 6% for solar PV). During summer and winter evening peaks, wind and solar, including co-located energy storage, are targeted to account for at least 20% of electricity supplied, an increase of around 10 percent. The plan also aims to add more than 300 GW of firm peaking capacity from renewables during 2026–2030. The capacity credit for wind and solar refers to the ratio of guaranteed power output from wind and solar generation, including co-located energy storage, at a 95% confidence level during power-supply security control periods, to total installed wind and solar capacity. The plan also calls for the development of system-friendly wind and solar power plants to improve their peaking capacity and strengthen their support for the secure and stable operation of the power system, evaluated at the provincial grid or power plant level. Further deployment targets include: 🎯 More than 370 GW of new wind and solar capacity in the “Three-North” renewable energy bases during 2026–2030. 🎯 Around 100 GW of offshore wind projects to start construction during 2026–2030, with total installed capacity exceeding 100 GW by 2030. 🎯 Around 410 GW of conventional hydropower by 2030. 🎯 More than 300 GW of new distributed renewable capacity during 2026–2030. 🎯 15 GW of concentrated #solarpower by 2030. 🎯 0.4 GW of #oceanenergy by 2030. 🎯 Around 160 GW of pumped-storage hydropower by 2030. 🎯 #Renewablehydrogen production of 2 million tonnes by 2030.
